Purity of Mathematics

My friend, Abhishek has put up a series of posts which describes various branches of Mathematics (Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics). Some of you may not be able to read them as they are in hindi.
Reading these I remembered a similar post on xkcd comparing purity of various field (branches)

I’ll agree with it but comic misses the Applied Mathematics, which i think will have application in the whole spectrum of various branches mentioned by comics. On the other side Pure mathematics is purely based on reason, ignoring its usability.

Mathematicians have always had differing opinions regarding the distinction between pure and applied mathematics. One of the most famous (but perhaps misunderstood) modern examples of this debate can be found in G.H. Hardy’s A Mathematician’s Apology.

Applied mathematics sought to express physical truth in a mathematical framework, whereas pure mathematics expressed truths that were independent of the physical world.

yesterday..i (actually with my friend aditya) i was able to complete all 62 available levels of Orio’s riddle. The objective is to advance and get to the next screen. Aftre each level you have to find url for next level..it was fun solving them…various techniques while solving these puzzles require exif info from images, anagrams, decryping various codes, source code of webpages and help of wikipedia, google. you can get started here. Also you can disscuss puzzles at forum.

Did you know about Dilbert Principle..

The Dilbert Principle refers to a 1990s satirical observation stating that companies tend to systematically promote their least-competent employees to management, in order to limit the amount of damage that they’re capable of doing.

Now i understand it all ..

The Dilbert Principle is a takeoff on the Peter Principle. The Peter Principle addresses the practice of hierarchical organizations (such as corporations and government agencies) to use promotions as a way to reward employees who demonstrate competence in their current position.
